According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are more than 4,800 fatal motorcycle crashes in United States each year. It accounts for at least 8.2 percent of fatal accident cases among motorists.
Common causes of motorcycle accident are speeding, running on red light, failure to yield, and failure to give turn signals. Motorcycle riding poses special problems for riders due to its inherent design limitations. Some of these are:
1.Wobbling and instability- Motorcycle models tend to have incongruent tires that tend to wobble during excessive speed. Riders often complain of wobbling at high speed and cause the motorcycle to lose its stability. Such phenomenon causes the motorcycle to trip and either crashed onto another vehicle or fall on its side. Such inherent design limitation poses road risk for motorcyclists, especially for young people who are untrained to ride one.
2.Potholes and mud-slick pavement- Rain and snow can at times cause pavement to be slippery. Leaves that are stuck in the mud can cause hazard to motorcyclists. Potholes, expansion and open bridge joints can cause the motorcyclist to stumble on the uneven road.
3.Edge breaks- When highways have uneven heights on lanes, it can cause the motorcyclist to trip, swerve, or lost control on the wheels. When highways have insufficient warnings on such road design, it causes accident risk to unsuspecting rider.
4.Gravel and construction areas- When motorcyclist approaches a gravel pavement, it causes difficulty for the tires to maneuver, prompting hazard for the rider or other pedestrian. Construction areas which have debris and other road objects can trigger collision at night.
These road hazards seems minimal to a car driver. However, such examples are enough to trigger instability and cause the motorcycle to lose control and collide onto another vehicle, center divider, or a pedestrian.
Some other causes of motorcycle accident are:
1.The truck driver makes a lane change and fails to notice a motorcyclist. Due to blind spots, truck drivers may go unwary of a lane-splitting motorcyclist and hit it on the side. Such collision is enough for the rider to sustain serious injuries.
2.The car is speeding at the intersection and fails to abide with the red light signal on time, hitting an oncoming or stationary motorcyclist.
